Cook the Book.ca was started by Jen, who realized that she suddenly had more cookbooks than almost any other kind of book, and was starting to get strange looks from people who think it’s odd to make your own condiments or spend an entire weekend perfecting a stock or smoked chicken. The looks are even stranger from people who knew Jen in University when she could only assemble meals out of things that came from a can or a box. She’s come a long way, baby!
The books in this project are chosen because they reflect the culinary views of Jen and her fellow hobby chefs: a focus on local ingredients, sustainable practices and real food. Unlike many other food blogs, these posts won’t include the recipes. Hopefully if you enjoy the reviews and photographs, you’ll be similarly inspired and support the chefs and publishers who created the book by purchasing your own copy.
Because all things involving food are more fun with friends, a number of hobby chefs have been invited to share their experiences with some different cookbooks. Some book sites will be cooked and reviewed by a single hobby chef, others will be a group effort. None of the hobby chefs have been professionally trained or make their living in the food-service industry. You can read their bios in the “Meet the Chefs” section of this site and on the individual book sites.
The recipes are all made and enjoyed in home kitchens, with varying collections of non-commercial equipment.
This project was inspired by a number of bloggers and hobby chefs who’ve decided to cook their way through their favourite cookbooks. While we sincerely thank them for their inspiration, nothing on this site is associated with anyone or any organization other than those mentioned in these pages.
In fact, everything on this site is the sole opinion of the author/hobby chef who wrote it, and does not reflect the views of their employers, associates, friends, pets, accountants, neighbours, cousin’s-second-wife’s-aunt’s-grandmother’s-budgie or anyone else for that matter.
If you have any questions about these sites or the chefs, please email info at cookthebook dot ca.
Thanks for reading, and Bon Appetit!
